You search for your own practice type in your city, and three competitors show up before you do — if you show up at all. Before assuming you need a complete SEO overhaul, it's worth checking a few common culprits first.

1. Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or unclaimed

This is the single most common issue. For local searches, your Google Business Profile often matters more than your website — it's what shows on the map pack. Check whether it's claimed, whether the category is accurate and specific (not just "Lawyer" when "Family Law Attorney" fits better), and whether your hours, phone number and address are current.

2. Your information isn't consistent everywhere

If your practice name, address or phone number differs even slightly between your website, your Google profile, and other directories, it creates doubt for Google about which version is correct — and that doubt shows up as lower rankings. This is worth a real audit, not a guess.

3. You have few or no reviews

Review count and recency are a real ranking factor for local search, not just a trust signal for potential clients. A practice with 60 reviews from two years ago and nothing since sends a weaker signal than one steadily gaining a few reviews each month.

4. Your website doesn't mention your service area explicitly

A homepage that never mentions your city or service area by name gives Google little to work with for local search. This doesn't mean stuffing your city name everywhere — it means having genuine, specific content (like a dedicated page per practice area or location) rather than one generic page trying to cover everything.

5. Your site is slow or broken on mobile

Most local searches happen on a phone. A slow-loading site, or one that's difficult to navigate on a small screen, hurts both your ranking and your conversion rate — even visitors who do find you are more likely to leave before contacting you.

Most ranking problems for independent practices come down to one or two of these five issues — rarely something exotic.

Where to start

Check your Google Business Profile first — it's free, fast to audit, and usually the highest-impact fix. Then look at consistency across directories, and only after that consider deeper website or content work.

We offer a free audit that checks all five of these for your specific practice. Book yours — takes us about 10 minutes, and you'll get a clear list of what's actually holding you back.
